2000 Home Price Comparison Survey
The 2000 Coldwell Banker Home Price Comparison Index allows you to quickly approximate how much your home might cost in any one of over 300 markets across North America and Canada. HPCI subject homes are based upon a single-family dwelling model with approximately 2,200 sq. ft.*, 4 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, family room (or equivalent) and 2-car garage. HOW THE INDEX WORKS

For example, if you live in Houston, Texas in a home with a market value of $195,000 approximately how much would it cost to replace it with a similar home in Hollywood Hills, CA? Multiply the market value of your current home by the index number of the destination city where you plan to move, then divide that number by the index number of the market where your current home is located:
       To replace a $195,000 home in Houston Texas with a comparably-sized property in Hollywood Hills, CA expect to pay approximately $660,562.

$195,000 x 271 ÷ 80 = $660,562

       The study's typical "subject home" is in Mount Pleasant, MI, the index's most affordable market with an average price of $103,640. Palo Alto, CA, is the index's most expensive market, where the average price of the "subject home" is $974,237. Index numbers for Canadian markets were calculated with U.S. dollar equivalent. The exchange rate used was based on the conversion rate at the time of publication.

The data also reflects the percentage change in the increase or decrease of average home prices per market from 1999 to 2000.
