BREAKING NEWS... Former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge Teams with IDO Security to Become New Key Advisor for MagShoe(TM) Program... READ MORE
If IDO Security, Inc. (OTC BB: IDOI) -- www.idosecurityinc.com -- has its way, its proprietary MagShoe Portable Metal Detector could become a familiar sight to millions of airline travelers worldwide, as one example and, in the process, establish the company as a significant new player in a multi-billion dollar security market that is growing exponentially amid heightened concerns over the threat of global terrorism.
The MagShoe’s ease of use and competitive pricing make the company’s flagship product an attractive solution for many security and theft prevention applications from airports to seaports, from schools to prisons, from high-tech businesses and factories to banks, mints and jewelry stores, as well as schools, sports stadiums, and border crossings.
What the IDO’s MagShoe does is intelligently scan footwear for anything containing metal, whether a knife, cutting blade, gun or bomb part all without the people being screened having to remove their shoes. The MagShoe is sensitive enough to detect concealed computer chips and metals that are not normally found in footwear. Among the factors checked are shoe balance, amount of metal and differences between two shoes. Sensors are able to detect objects as small as a cardboard knife blade or as large as handguns or gun parts.
The shoe scanning system was successfully tested by Britain’s Home Office Police Scientific Development Branch. As a result, the MagShoe has been accepted for use by the UK’s Department for Transport. IDO Security has also initiated testing and approval procedures with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Homeland Security for use at U.S. airports.
“This is a vital, missing piece of technology for the security sector. The market is enormous,” says IDO Security President Michael Goldberg.
Innovative Shoe Scanning Technology Developed in Security-Conscious Israel
The company’s Israeli subsidiary, IDO Security Ltd., invented, patented and developed the MagShoe which was then tested by the ISA (Israeli Security Agency). The concept and product development was triggered by security screening failures that allowed both 9-11 terrorists and Paris shoe bomber Richard Reid to successfully smuggle blades and plastic explosive devices through traditional arch-style metal detectors.
“Our current arsenal of tools is lacking,” says Goldberg. “Walk-through gate detectors are not reliable in detecting metal in shoes or on the lower body extremities. That is why airports require passengers to remove their shoes at security checkpoints. With MagShoe the walk-through gate detectors can now be complemented, thus screening the shoes and lower extremities without the time, expense and humiliation of removing your footwear.”
The MagShoe utilizes electro-magnetic fields to detect concealed weapons in shoes and around the ankles without the wearer removing their shoes, as is now required in most airport security scanning systems. The detection system ignores metal objects such as shoe nails that are a normal part of footwear.
In addition to providing more effective security screening, the device eliminates traveler discomfort, anxiety and annoyance by allowing people to keep their shoes on speeding up security scans in the process. The passenger simply steps onto the device, waits less than a few seconds and then steps off. At the completion of the scan, proprietary software controlling the device emits an audio and visual signal to the operator who can view the scan results on a control panel.
Not having to remove shoes has health benefits as well consider that cultures of floor samples taken at a San Diego, Las Vegas and Phoenix airport checkpoints recently revealed a broad variety of contagious bacteria and fungi including ringworm.
Since the MagShoe can detect both ferrous and non-ferrous metals, the device has theft-prevention applications as well within electronic manufacturing and assembly facilities, logistic centers and warehouses, gold and silver industries, jewelry and watch workshops, and coin mints.
The MagShoe is certified by the International Organization of Standardization under ISO 9001:2000 compliance rules covering the design, development and manufacture of electronic, electro-optical and electro-mechanical devices. The MagShoe is currently assembled in Israel. Manufacturing and/or assembly could move to the U.S. within the next two years as demand for the device ramps up, according to Goldberg.
Broad Public, Private Uses for Shoe Security Scanners
The MagShoe offers significant time and money savings while adding convenience through its easy portability, the incredibly quick full scan (1.6-seconds on the average), and its ability to allow people to keep their shoes on as they pass through security checkpoints.
The MagShoe is already installed and operating successfully at international airports in Spain, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Kenya. The portable scanning device is also used by Israel’s National Security Agency for the prime minister’s personal protection, as well as in the Parliament building, the President’s residence and border crossings. Additionally, it is used at the Royal Australian Mint and National Family Courthouses in Australia. Air India, Monarch, Britannia and First Choice Airways use MagShoe services through private security companies for improved passenger service and tighter security.
“There is no product on the market that compares with the MagShoe in detecting concealed metal in shoes,” says Goldberg. “Increased use in airports will make the MagShoe name visible to everybody.”
Investment Considerations
IDO Security appears to have the right product at the right time. This innovative, effective and relatively inexpensive device provides a unique solution to security screening problems.
“We believe that the market for security and inspection products will continue to be positively impacted by the threat of terrorist activities and by new government regulations and appropriations for security and inspection products,” says IDO President Michael Goldberg.
Goldberg, most recently served as president of RX Medical Services. He has served on the boards of public companies and is managing director of Monarch Capital, LLC, a private company that consults for both private and public companies. Previously he was an Assistant District Attorney and operated a private law practice in Philadelphia.
The continuing strength of the security marketplace was most recently substantiated last May’s $445 million in grant awards by the Department of Homeland Security to strengthen security systems at seaports, transit and intercity bus systems.
Annual U.S. government spending on homeland security has jumped nearly 200% over the past five years, from just under $17 billion in 2001 to about $50 billion today. The United Kingdom is expected to spend more than $6 billion on anti-terror measures over the next ten years.
Investors, understandably have taken notice. The Homeland Security Index (HSX), created in 2004, follows 30 large, medium and small companies that focus their activity exclusively on homeland security products and services. These companies returned 25 percent to investors, compared with a 10 percent return for the Standard and Poor’s 500.
There is little question over the need for more effective security controls. Terrorist attacks worldwide increased more than 25 percent last year. At the same time, the number of fatalities from those attacks rose 54%. The U.S. State Department reports more than 14,000 terrorist attacks occurred throughout the world in 2006.
IDO Security is actively marketing its unique security device most recently showcasing its MagShoe device at the 2007 TranSec World Expo (Transport Security Expo and Conference) in Amsterdam. The Expo is one of the largest international forums for innovative transportation security products.
The company is simultaneously exploring potential partnerships with existing international security equipment distributors. In addition to use at airport security checkpoints, the MagShoe is also ideal for use in prisons, schools, stadiums and other public locations and venues where individual security screening is required or desirable.
“This is a very simple, very robust and very, very sophisticated product,” says Goldberg. We are dedicated to making substantial inroads in this multi-billion market with the MagShoe.”
