Keep some irons in the fire

Thurman Smith: "It's nasty out there, but try to have some irons in the fire, within the bounds of your risk ceiling and need for diversifications. That is, seek out the few funds that are still working so you will have something in play when all this is over. From the low point of bear markets the market can take off in a hurry. With selections among diversified stock funds so limited, don't be bothered if you have more than the normal ten to thirteen percent weighting in a near-money-market fund like Merk Hard Currency. But there would be an early-sale fee if held less than ninety days at Schwab, TDAmeritrade and most other shops. So if you want to be more than twenty-five percent on the sidelines keep some in a regular money fund should a buy opportunity arise sooner than you might expect."
